THE EYE Edit

INTRODUCTION:

  • The human eye is remarkable
  • It accommodates to changing lighting conditions and focuses light rays originating from various distances from the eye.
  • When all the components of the eye function properly, light is converted to impulses and conveyed to the brain where an image is perceived.

HOW DOES THE EYE WORK?

  • Light hits an object, then reflects off of the object and into your eye.
  • The light travels through your cornea and slightly bends.
  • The light then travels through your pupil and shines through the lens of your eye.
  • The lens then bends the light and creates a smaller upside down image of the object in the back of your eye.
  • When the retina senses the light, it sends the image to your brain.
  • Then the brain takes the image sent from your eye and turns it right side up. =)

CAMERA V.S. THE EYE:

  • The individual components of the eye work in a manner similar to a camera. Each part plays a vital role in providing clear vision.
 EYE CAMERA
 Cornea → Lens cover
 Lens → Lens
 Retina → Film
 Iris/Pupil → Aperture

WHY DO YOUR EYES HURT WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?

  • Eye dilation- The pupil is a circular hole in the middle of the iris which regulates the amount of light passing through to the retina. In dark conditions the pupil expands of “dilates” to allow as much light as possible to pass through the eye. In bright conditions the pupil shrinks, limiting the amount of light passing through.

& BECAUSE MR. LEESON SAID WE HAD TO...

  • Rods: more numerous of photoreceptors. Cones are more sensitive than rods. Rods are responsible for scotopic, vision, and dark adapted.
  • Cones: cones are divided into three parts “red” cones , “green” cones, and “blue” cones based on measured response curves. The green and red cones are concentered in the fovea centrails. The blue cones have the highest sensitivity and mostly found outside the fovea.

FUN FACT!

WHAT DETERMINES THE COLOR OF YOUR EYE?

  • The amount of melanin in the cells of the outside layer of your iris.
  • Melanin is a natural substance that absorbs light, giving color to hair, skin, and eyes.
  • The amount of melanin we have is determined by our genes.
  • If you have a large amount of melanin (like Brittany) you are likely to have brown eyes and darker colored skin and hair.
  • If you have a little amount of melanin (like Kassie) then you are more likely to have blue eyes, pale skin, and blonde hair.
  • If you have the perfect amount of melanin (like Chelsea) then your perfect.
