Two monkeys launched 300 miles into space in a Jupiter AM-18 rocket. Their sub-orbital flight reached speeds up to 10,000 mph for 15 minutes. They were weightless for about 9 minutes and withstood forces 38 times the normal pull of gravity on Earth. The pair was recovered 1,500 miles away near Puerto Rico in the South Atlantic. They became the first surviving living creatures successfully recovered after a space flight.
